VoIP Phone Calls - Local vs Long Distance

How does Local Calling and Long Distance Calling work with VoIP?

Today, most VoIP providers permit you to make nationwide calls at a flat rate for either unlimited usage or a fixed number of minutes (normally including the US, Canada and Puerto Rico). Some VoIP providers, though, still charge for long distance calls made to a number outside your local calling area, similar to traditional telephone services. This will differ by VoIP provider and/or the VoIP service level you choose. Calls to other subscribers within the same VoIP service network are almost always free.

With VoIP, can I get an area code outside my local calling area?

Many VoIP providers do allow you to select an area code different from the area in which you live if you want to be considered local to another calling area. This means you have the ability to save long distance charges should your specific provider charge for such services, but also means that local people who call you may incur long distance charges depending on their area code and service.
